CHILDREN SEE AND HEAR. They watch television. They hear adults talk.
In the aftermath of the terrible school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that took the lives of 17 students and teachers, they may be filled with anxiety, particularly if they attend a child care center ¾ their school. It is important to know how to talk to children in the wake of such tragedies, how to reassure them that they are safe, how to explain it to them honestly without arousing fear in them.
Child Trends, a non-profit research organization dedicated to improving the lives and prospects of children and their families, has put out a helpful guide for parents and teachers of young children on how to talk to them about events like the Parkland shooting. To access it click on the link childtrends.org and go to the blog resources to help children in the wake of a school shooting.
